How to make a DIY Hand Disinfection Spray

With the current corona virus, face caps and disinfectant soap and hand gel are hardly available in the stores. Although you can discuss the usefulness of face masks, washing your hands regularly is an effective way to reduce the odds of getting sick. If water isn’t available a hand disinfection spray for the road is very useful.

With simple and inexpensive means, you can also make a disinfecting hand spray yourself based on denatured alcohol, which is used as a cleaning agent and as fuel for burners. The other ingredients are glycerol (glycerin) and hydrogen peroxide that you can purchase at a drugstore or pharmacy.

Typically, denatured alcohol contains 85% ethanol, water, a colorant, odorant and to make it unsuitable for consumption a few percent of e.g. methanol or isopropyl alcohol, but this can vary by country. The name can also vary, in the Netherlands it is sold as (burner)spiritus, in the UK as methylated spirit.

For 1 liter of hand sanitizer mix:
943 ml or gram of denatured alcohol (containing 85% ethanol)
42 ml or gram of hydrogen peroxide 3%
15 ml (or 18.9 grams) of glycerol

For skin disinfection it is important that the final ethanol percentage is around 80%. If you use an ethanol liquid with a higher concentration of ethanol for preparation, you can dilute it with water. This also applies to hydrogen peroxide; you can add a smaller volume proportionally and supplement it with water up to 1 liter.

Be safe!

42 ml of gram waterstofperoxide 3%
15 ml (of 18,9 gram) glycerol
